Why 'no news' is not good news for your reputation
Run monitoring for a month and find almost nothing? The tempting read is that customers are quietly content. The accurate read is usually harsher: you are not part of the conversation at all.
What silence signals
Buyers in your category are asking for recommendations somewhere, and other names are coming up. Silence means your customers are not moved to mention you, your happy outcomes are not being converted into public proof, and the recommendation threads that decide local buying happen without you existing in them.
The invisibility cost
Invisible businesses pay full price for every customer, because nothing compounds. Talked-about businesses get customers arriving pre-sold. The gap between the two shows up as advertising spend: word of mouth is the subsidy you are declining.
Moving from silence to presence
- Ask for reviews systematically; review volume is manufactured word of mouth, legitimately
- Give people something specific to repeat: a distinctive guarantee, a signature service moment, a name for the thing you do
- Show up where the conversation happens: answer local questions helpfully as the business, sparingly
- Do referral-worthy work and then make referring effortless, links, cards, a sentence in the invoice email
Measuring the shift
Your baseline mention count is the score. If systematic asking and one memorable service change do not move it within a quarter, the product experience itself is not generating stories, and that is the real finding.
MyView watches every mention of your brand and tells you what needs a reply.
